My theme explores the abilities of paper. From the creation of hands (“Reaching”) to the use of books as a canvas (“Meiji Shrine”) to forming small flowers sitting upon a pond (“Uninterrupted”). The works all examine the various the abilities of perception. “Meiji Shrine” captures the historical beauty of my experience at Meiji shrine in Japan. “Reaching” portrays a cut off hand with its fingers snapped off reaching for the other hand holding a mousetrap. The shadow box and embroidery hoop from “Forest” and “Lost at Sea” both serve as a small portal to tell a story. While “Uninterruped” portrays the beauty of a pond and the artist trading cards allowed the viewer to see through a different perspective using its holes and layers. Along with the use of paper I have also incorporated other techniques such as sewing, layering with gesso, watercolor pencils and using old materials such as the table and shadow box and reconstructing them. These methods help in my goal of portraying the idea of memory, stories, and perception. These artworks are linked to my experiences and dreams I have had throughout my artist journey.
